Events marking the martyrs’ day have been postponed in Lakes and Western Equatoria State over security concerns.

The martyrs’ day is marked annually to commemorate South Sudanese who sacrificed their lives for the independence of South Sudan.

In Juba, the main event was held at Dr John Garang Mausoleum. Vice President James Wani Igga also travelled to Bor, the capital of Jonglei State, to preside over the occasion there.

But Lakes and Western Equatoria state officials have postponed the events.

In Western Equatoria, events to mark the martyrs’ day in the state have been cancelled due to rising insecurity in the state.

A soldier shot dead two youth near the airstrip in Yambio on Wednesday. This morning, another two were shot and injured near the same spot.

Governor Joseph Bakosoro says today will be a day for burial and mourning of those killed.

“All the people were preparing themselves for the martyrs’ day, to honor those who died during the war, but due to insecurity, we as a security committee have decided that the army have funeral and the citizens also have funeral,” he stated.

The governor called for calm in the area.

In Lakes State, officials say there were inadequate preparations for the day.

The SPLM spoke person and director for civic education in the state, Martin Malual, said officials had gone to Chueibet to calm the situation after a communal clash there yesterday.

He told Eye Radio that such issues have delayed their preparations for the day.

“We postponed the celebration until the 7^th [of August],” Mr Malual said.

While occasions to mark the day have been postponed until next week in Lakes State, Western Equatoria State is yet to fix the date for the events.
