Fuel prices have doubled over the last few days in Aweil town, the capital of Northern Bahr al-Ghazal State.

A litter of petrol that was selling at 8 pounds is now 16. Deputy Mayor of Aweil Simon Tong Deng says there are only two stations that have fuel in the town.

He told Eye Radio that there was no fuel in the town last week.

“When a businessman son from Aweil here came with petrol from Juba, which is now in YDK and Future Petrol stations, there is a sign of improvement,” he said.

Motorists and drivers say the shortage and high prices of fuel have limited their movement.

“If you cannot afford as a citizen to buy fuel you cannot go anywhere you want,” said Joseph Machar, motorist.

Owners of petrol stations in the town say the shortage is due to the closure of the border with Sudan.

The traders say that the scarcity of the US dollars to import fuel from East Africa is causing the rise in the prices.
