Recent fighting between the government and the SPLA-In Opposition has displaced 4,000 civilians in Fangak County, Jonglei state, the UN Spokesperson in New York says.

On Friday last week, heavy fighting between government and Opposition forces broke out in Fangak County with both sides using heavy artilleries.

Media reports showed that several people were killed in the attacks.

The Spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric said, the latest clashes in Fangak County in Jonglei, was the most sustained since May between the two warring parties.

In a briefing to media in New York, the Spokesperson said the clashes were documented by the IGAD Monitoring and Verification Team in the country.

“The fighting reportedly resulted in the displacement of approximately 4,000 civilians,” said Mr Dujarric.

“And the mission says this hostility represents the most sustained fighting that take a place between the main parties since May.”

Mr. Dujarric says UNMISS is working hand in hand with IGAD and continues to provide protection and logistical support for them.
