The deputy speaker of Lakes State assembly has resigned. Hon Nhial Enock submitted his resignation to the speaker, Dhieu Wal, last evening.

Hon Nhial told Eye Radio that he stepped down in respect of an unwritten agreement to share power between counties.

“The reason is simple; we have a kind of what is called unwritten agreement. The person who is currently the speaker is coming from Yirol,” Hon Enock said.

“We have an arrangement that if the speaker comes from Greater Yirol, then the deputy should come from the other side.”

The speaker accepted the resignation and asked the MPs to elect a new deputy.

Hours later, the MPs chose Hon. Ayen Meen, for the position. Ms Ayen says 37 MPs were in the assembly during the voting.

She told Eye Radio that 21 MPs voted for her while 16 others voted against.

Before becoming the deputy speaker, Ms Ayen was the chairperson of the specialized committee of Land and Environment in the state assembly.
