The medical charity, Medicins Sans Frontiers, says the number of patients it treats weekly at the UN camp in Malakal has increased three times since June.

In a statement, the charity says the health of the IDPs in the camp is being worsened by overcrowding and poor living conditions.

MSF spokesperson Jacob Kuhen says they treat more than 130 patients in a room meant for only 50.

“With that much overcrowding, it is very easy for diseases to spread,” Mr Kuhen told Eye Radio.

He says most of the people came from areas where humanitarian access was cut off due to insecurity.

Mr Kuhen says more than 16,000 people entered the camp in July and August, raising the total number of IDPs in the camp to more than 48,000.

He cautioned that the IDPs need more space and pit latrines.

“Our patients are going to continue to get sick until the camp itself allocates more space for the population,” he added.
