Women and children are the most affected groups in the ongoing conflict in the country, the Ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare has said.

Regina Ossa, the Director General at the ministry, says violence against women does not only affect them but the entire family and generations to come.

She was speaking during a campaign organized by the International Rescue Committee to end violence against women.

“Gender inequality exists in south Sudan and it negatively affects women and girls more than their counterparts, the males,” she stated.

The country director of IRC, Wendy Taeube, has this to say about the violence in South Sudan.

“There is beating, harassing; there is rape, there is also economic violence which withdraws money or resources from women because of the gender and variable harassment to all South Sudanese,” said Ms Taeube.

The International Rescue Committee has been working in South Sudan since 1989, responding to humanitarian crises.
