More than 200 shops have been closed in Wau, Western Bahr el-Ghazal, due to shortage of US dollars to import goods.

The chairperson of the state Trade Union says traders were not benefiting from their businesses.

Wul Charles says the situation worsened in the last few weeks due to more restrictions at the border with Sudan, from where traders used to import goods.

“It was also reported this morning [Wednesday] that a similar incident is also taking place in the town of Jur River County; that Sudanese traders from Darfur are closing their shops in the town,” our stringer Deng Dimo reported.

At the official bank rate, $100 is selling at 300 pounds, but there is a limited access.

In the black market in Wau, $100 is now selling at about 2,000 pounds.
